Tata Refractories Limited (TRL) and Tata Steel Sports Foundation (TSSF) today announced a combined sponsorship of Rs 5 lakhs to help Orissa’s first Woman International Master (WIM) Kiran Manisha Mohanty become a Woman Grand Master (WGM) in chess. The amount will be utilised by Kiran to avail special coaching and participate in National as well as international tournaments during the year 2009. In a function held in Bhubaneswar earlier on February 9, TLR Managing Director C D Kamath handed over a promissory note for Rs 4 lakhs, while Tata Steel Chief Resident Executive Rajesh Chintak presented a cheque of Rs 1 lakh on behalf of TSSF. A thrilled Kiran thanked Tatas for their timely support and expressed confidence to scale new heights in the 64-square sport. Kiran’s father Kishore Mohanty, mother Manjubala Mohanty and coach Manoj Panigrahi were present on the occasion. The sponsorship is a special sports-promotion gesture by the Belpahar-based TRL, which is celebrating the golden jubilee of its existence this year.
